Amazon has announced that it will be opening a second headquarters. It has affectionately been known in the media as simply HQ2. Dozens of cities have put in their application to bring the tech giant to the area in hopes of creating upwards of 50,000 good paying jobs at one of the fasting expanding companies in the world. Slowly the list of potential landing spots for HQ2 dwindled down to fewer and fewer urban locales.
- Raleigh, North Carolina
- Denver, Colorado
- Washington D.C.
Raleigh, North Carolina
Raleigh is a very up and coming city that is attracting a ton of young talent in a variety of fields making it an ideal location for a giant tech company that is always on the prowl for these types of individuals. This new headquarters will require young and motivated talent to keep operations running.
Denver has been expanding in recent decades and has something that very few other cities have: space. This space makes adding the additional housing and public transportation infrastructure necessary to accommodate so many more employees far easier than it would be in a more well established city.
Our nations capital has one of the highest percentage of educated individuals making it an ideal landing spot for such a large tech company. Relative to other cities on the list, its public transportation is well established which is a huge selling point for workers as they would not be required to own a vehicle for their commute to work.
All three of these cities have various tax advantages that they are using to encourage the tech giant to their location. Its current headquarters in Seattle has proven to be an integral part of the local economy and other city officials want to see much of the same. There is no doubt that whichever city is eventually selected for HQ2 will see huge changes occur rather quickly. Adding 50,000 jobs to any city will certainly have a noticeable impact. Some critics claim that the cost of living of the selected city may skyrocket rather quickly thus pricing some current residents out of the area. Others claim the addition of the headquarters will add millions of dollars to the local economy each year enabling them to expand public services. Regardless of the outcome, the announcement of the HQ2 location is coming soon and it will undoubtedly change the landscape of the city for decades to come.
